Two main parts to this episode. The first is where I talk on a walk about future thoughts, including the possibility of inviting other songwriters to talk about what they do much in the same way that I do. I ask for feedback about this. The second part is an extended experimental playing around with an alternative tuning where the bass note is a D and the rest you have to guess. The noises in the background are of the living room or of a walk - most of this episode was recorded on the Palm Tungsten in true rough format. Special greetings to my friends in Brazil this time around. Episode 060 was a rough that was begun to answer a need that was addressed too late and therefore never came to fruition. It is a rough from the Bible about Romans chapter 8. I will very likely re-visit this one as I like the potential of both the music and the lyrics. This cast starts with a clip from the Cajon mentioned in episode 53. I give some examples about using a secondary instrument to help break a musical logjam.

Then a rough tune called Mother and Child from sometime in May 2006. It was written driven by a theoretical idea of someone looking at a mom and child in a park - never really happened.

Rain and traffic jam noise. What better background for a program about songwriting! In this episode I "create" using the dashboard of the car and the Palm Tungsten recording sitting on the passenger seat beside me. I initially removed some of the noise in audacity, but the results were too tinny so put it back in to give that "you are there" feel.

This episode also requests that you send in audio feedback to let me know where you are listening from. I have noticed that there are quite some subscribers from N. America, Europe and China. Where are you? Let me know at nlnnet+roughmix@gmail.com, whether by Audio note of simple text.

In this "landmark" episode 50, (50 means something doesn't it?) I go back in time to what was a rough in the 80s. It is a tune I wrote called "Don't Hesitate" as I was a part of the music group "Pacific". [Use this URL to find videos on Google Video: http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=Pacific+KKR]

It was recorded on a Tascam 4 track recorder which used normal audio cassettes and recorded tracks 1 and 2 on one side and 3 and 4 on the other, so that you could only play back one side 1. If you played it on side 2 it would all be reversed. Maybe one day I will release more of the stuff I did. If there is interest let me know at nlnnet+roughmix@gmail.com The person who gives the best reason for doing so will be mentioned on a future podcast, and maybe will also get a special prize. This is another tune dropped onto the Palm Tungsten as I was hacking around. You will hear background noise which is for the most part my 4 year old daughter.

As for the lyrics that came into this development it happened because I thought that the tune (which came first) sounded like a celebration, and this made me think of a birthday celebration, and then I thought about a "bigger" birthday that would have a potentially larger audience, hence the Christmas context. It is also now the time to write a Christmas tune if I want it to have play in 2006.

RoughMix 042 - Relaxed

Two instrumental pieces. The first is a "by accident piece" as I was just hacking around a bit high up on the guitar neck, and I liked the initial progression so I made up some more.

The second short snippet is a further variation on my work with the CMaj9 chord. I like the brightness of the sound and this rough has me moving into a bit more rhymthically.

Both tunes were recorded on the Palm Tungsten using its built in mike, complete with background noise as the stuff was captured.

In this episode I do some mixing, some rough mixing - yet another tool to help develop a song. I look at a song I first dealt with in episode 11 if you want more info about how the earlier development took place.

I have a bonus this time. For those who contact me directly I can send to you mp3 files of each individual track IF you contact me prior to 28 February, 2006. Take me up on this offer while it lasts!

An invite is re-issued to other songwriters who want to share what they are up to. If it fits we will share it.

If you listen and want others to know it then visit the http://frappr.com/RoughMix site. You might be suprised that you can find kindred spirits there that can help you even more than I can.

If you want additional info you can also email me at nlnnet [at] gmail.com or Skype me at the ID: briankelley

Glad to have you with me at episode 27. In this one, I give an example of another exercise I do, using a well known tune to play around with. In this case I used the kids tune 3 Blind Mice.

Please apply it to whatever instrument you yourself play, even if that instrument is your own voice. Let me know which instrument you play and I would love to have some samples of your music to share with others who listen to this cast. Be sure to contact me at nlnnet[at]Gmail.com, or feel free to leave me a voice message on Skype - ID: briankelley!

As always, add yourself to the Frapper map if not already there. It is fun to see who is listening from where - and maybe a good place to connect with others as well. Feel free to vote for the Podcast over at PodcastAlley.com if you really like the podcast, but more importantly tell a few friends about it directly.

In this episode I depart from the norm to celebrate a little bit. I present two tunes I wrote over 20 years ago.

They were recorded on an analog 4 track recorder. Tune 1 is called "All Tied Up", which has a double meaning. Tune two is called "Don't Hesitate".

The influence was of the 80s, but I still like both tunes, and hope that you do as well.

This episode takes a listen to a rough I recorded on my Palm Tungsten which has a built in mike. It is ideal to capture ideas before they slip away when there is no access to better recording possibilities, or no time to set up the system.

This podcast is after all about the process of writing the songs and less about the songs themselves. The tune as an example here is in the key of G and its working title is Curtain Call.

This episode is an extended free for all as I truly played with an idea. It is not edited and this captures what I put down as it happened. This is very often how I write music, by capturing it in a raw form and then processing it afterwards - now possible due to the technology I posssess - which has not always been the case.

Please visit the Frappr site and let me know from where you are listening. My blog is available at KelleyNews.blogspot.com

In this case my problem will be of retro - how do I recreate the sound without having given indication as to how I played it initially - but this is a small problem in most cases.

In a manger in a dirty stall
lay a baby sent to save us all
as a young girl responds to the call
to bear the Son of God

In the heavens rose a new born light
so the wise men followed in the night
and the angels sang with all their might
Hosanna Christ is born

Hosanna Christ is born!
Hosanna to the newborn king
Hosanna Christ is born, is born, is born

And the shepherds caring for their sheep
are awakened from a nearing sleep
as the angels voices calling from the deep, cry out
Hosanna Christ is born, is born, is born!

Hosanna Christ is born!
Hosanna to the newborn king
Hosanna Christ is born, is born, is born

In a manger in a dirty stall
lay a baby sent to save us all
as a young girl responds to the call
to bear the Son of God

Hosanna Christ is born!
Hosanna to the newborn king
Hosanna Christ is born, is born, is born

I was was taken by the thought of Mary initially hearing of the news that she would become a mom to God. The other players in this drama were also clueless as to what it really meant. This recording was the intial recording, full of mistakes, to capture the tune as it was at its inception.I here followed the rules I have stated here often. I got it down. It was recorded so that I could later edit and improve. This episode explores some things to look for as soon as others take part in the song. Here the song is played live by a band that had slightly less than 1 hour to practice it and with engineering that was designed for the live audience by non-professionals who mean well and do their best, but do not have a clue as to how to mix for live music for recording.

The process of developing a song in its RoughMix format can also involve others and still be very
rough!

This episode has me working with a song largely driven by a riff I still love, and little to no lyrical support. Basically all of the lyrics here are fillers to help me to have a melody line for later.
